Start locally

Check the local waste authority and the collection program that will actually receive the used item. Do not infer pet-waste acceptance from a general food-scrap program.

Keep home compost separate

EPA lists pet waste and cat litter among materials to avoid in home compost. A product described as compostable does not turn a backyard pile into an approved pet-waste process.

Follow the product instructions

The checked pad directions specify trash disposal and no flushing. Keep pads and used waste bags out of a presumed recycling or drain route unless the responsible authority explicitly instructs otherwise.

A question for the local authority

Ask whether the program accepts pet waste in bags, which bag materials or certifications it permits, and which bin or drop-off stream applies. A generic instruction to accept compostable food-service items does not answer those questions. Save the dated response and check again if the service changes. This site does not maintain a live database of all municipal rules or claim that any particular facility has accepted your item.

Before you decide

  • Check receiving authority
  • Do not assume food-scrap eligibility
  • Read product disposal directions
